Valentine's Day Flowers in Charlotte: When to Order for 2027

Valentine's Day 2027 falls on Sunday, February 14. If you're sending flowers in Charlotte, place your order by the last week of January for the best selection. Then decide early whether you want delivery on Friday the 12th, Saturday the 13th or Sunday itself, because a weekend Valentine's Day changes how deliveries work.

For flowers that feel a little more special than the usual dozen roses, look at what North Carolina growers have in February: tulips, ranunculus, anemones, hyacinths and Icelandic poppies.

The short version

  • Valentine's Day 2027 is a Sunday.
  • Order two to three weeks ahead, which means the last week of January.
  • Choose your delivery day on purpose: Friday at work, Saturday at home, or Sunday if your florist delivers that day.
  • Long-stem red roses aren't grown commercially in North Carolina, so local winter flowers are the fresher, more distinctive choice.

The 2027 timeline at a glance

When What to do
Now through early January Settle on a budget and a style. If you have a florist in mind, ask when they start taking Valentine's orders.
Last week of January (Jan 24 to 31) Place your order. This is the sweet spot for selection.
Week of February 1 Confirm the address, delivery window and card message.
Friday, February 12 Delivery option: to her workplace, before the weekend.
Saturday, February 13 Delivery option: at home, the day before.
Sunday, February 14 Valentine's Day. Confirm your florist delivers on Sundays before you count on it.

Why ordering early pays off

Most people order late. In a Society of American Florists survey of its member florists after Valentine's Day 2018, an average of 56 percent of each shop's holiday orders came in on February 14 itself. That rush is exactly when the best stems are already spoken for.

Ordering ahead gives you three things:

  • Choice. You pick the flowers and colors, instead of taking what's left.
  • A better delivery slot. Popular windows fill first.
  • Time to plan the card. A rushed card message is the easiest part to get wrong.

Cost is a factor too. Most Valentine's flowers sold in the US come from abroad, and in early 2026, importers warned that tariffs on flowers from Colombia and Ecuador were pushing prices up, according to WLRN. Whether that continues into 2027 is hard to say. Either way, it's worth setting your budget early.

A Sunday Valentine's Day: pick your delivery day

The day of the week matters more than people expect. In the same survey coverage, a florist noted that when Valentine's Day fell on a Tuesday, more customers asked for early deliveries to the recipient's workplace on Monday. When it fell midweek, most wanted delivery on the day itself.

With the holiday on a Sunday in 2027, you have three good options:

  • Friday, February 12, at work. Flowers at the office are seen and talked about, and they set up the weekend. Check that her workplace accepts deliveries and that she'll be in that day.
  • Saturday, February 13, at home. Relaxed and private, and you avoid the Sunday question entirely.
  • Sunday, February 14. The day itself. Not every florist delivers on Sundays, so ask before you plan around it. Picking up a bouquet yourself on Saturday is a good fallback.

Where Valentine's roses come from

The classic Valentine's flower has a long trip behind it. According to NC State's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, long-stem red roses aren't commercially grown in North Carolina. Fresh cut flowers sold for Valentine's Day in the US arrive mostly from Colombia and Ecuador, and around 90 percent come through Miami, WLRN reported in February 2026.

There's nothing wrong with imported roses. Many are beautiful. But a bouquet built around flowers grown closer to home will stand out, and it often lasts longer.

Local flowers in season for Valentine's Day

NC State's Cut Flower and Postharvest Floriculture Program checked with local farmers, wholesalers and florists and named five winter flowers to look for around Valentine's Day.

  • Tulips
  • Ranunculus
  • Anemones
  • Hyacinths
  • Icelandic poppies

A 2025 NC State Extension article from Lee County adds amaryllis and crocus, and suggests dried bouquets from local growers as another option.

Why local can be better: flowers grown nearby spend less time in transit, so they're usually fresher when they arrive, and fresher flowers last longer, NC State notes. February in the Piedmont is still winter, though, so what's available depends on the weather. Ask your florist what's coming in that week, and be open to a mix of local stems and roses.

Finding local flowers around Charlotte

Local flower farming is growing. About 10,800 US farms reported growing flowers and greens for florists in the 2022 Census of Agriculture, more than 50 percent more than in 2017, according to the Lee County Extension article.

Places to start:

  • Ask your florist whether they buy from North Carolina growers, and request local stems by name.
  • NC State's directory of North Carolina cut flower growers lists farms across the state, including several within about an hour of Charlotte. Many sell through their own websites or social media.
  • localflowers.org, run by the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers, lets you search for growers near you.
  • The Charlotte Regional Farmers Market on Yorkmont Road is open Wednesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the NC Department of Agriculture. In winter, markets like it may carry bulbs or dried arrangements rather than fresh cut flowers, so call ahead.

Keep them looking fresh

A few care steps from NC State make a real difference:

  1. Trim the stems at the base before putting them in water. A straight cut works fine.
  2. Use the flower food packet if one comes with the bouquet.
  3. Keep them in bright light, but out of direct sun and away from heat vents.
  4. Check the water daily. Top it off, and replace it completely if it turns cloudy, recutting the stems when you do.
  5. Remove wilting blooms and leaves as soon as you see them.

If she has cats, keep lilies out of the arrangement. We explain why in our guide to how often to buy your wife flowers, which also covers the other dates worth planning for.

Planning past February

Valentine's Day is one date on a calendar that also holds her birthday, your anniversary and Mother's Day, which is May 9 in 2027. That's the problem we're building Flowers on Cue to solve in Charlotte: you tell our concierge, June, about the people and dates that matter, and she plans each delivery with a local florist.

We haven't opened yet, and we can't promise we'll be delivering in time for Valentine's Day 2027. If we are, people on the list will hear first.
